This is Internet Salmagundi

This website’s address is: https://internet-salmagundi.com.
It is a project of Wallace Web Design, LLC. which is incorporated in the state of Utah, United States. Wallace Web Design is solely responsible for all content within this website.

The Internet Salmagundi website is meant to be educational and informative in nature. I hope that you find it interesting and informative. I am not paid nor compensated in anyway by anyone for anything that I post here. While I don’t formally endorse anything included here, the fact that I am including it does mean that to some degree I agree with it and/or find it interesting, useful and meaningful. Caveat emptor applies!

I am not in the business of amassing troves of data on other people. I have a hard enough time keeping track of my own, I certainly don’t want to keep track of yours. Further, it’s none of my damn business! I do use Google and Bing analytics systems, among others, to see how people (you) use this website. I want to know what you, as a general visitor to this site, find useful and how you use this website. Why? So I can improve it, of course, really.

I am aware that in the process of using search analytics systems this site is gathering data that will no doubt be used by others, such as data-brokers and other surveillance capitalists, in a multitude of ways that I am not necessarily aware and in ways that none of us have afforded them permission. We live in the age of the surveillance economy, where everything we do online is surveilled and potentially monetized. (If it isn’t monetized yet, some creative/inventive soul will figure out a way to monetize it.) That is an issue that goes way beyond use of any one website. It is an issue that needs great consideration and that you will find is a central point of interest in some of this site’s content. Below is some of the obligatory stuff I need to let you know.

Terms of Service

This website does not offer any form of subscription and it doesn’t provide the type of service where site visitors would be removed for violation of any traditional Terms of Service. I do provide a service in terms of listing articles and other forms of information. If you don’t like what I post or any other aspect of this site you have the power to simply not visit the site. In the end I hope you enjoy the information I provide in this website.

Return Policy

This website does not sell products. Therefore there’s nothing tangible that can be returned.

Notes on Structure and Content in Internet Salmagundi

The content in “Internet Salmagundi” is not necessarily original to me. It is meant to highlight web-content that is interesting to me. I am sharing it for those who might share these interests. In that respect it is meant to be “educational” and I don’t mean to necessarily represent it as my original content. (Although, some of it is original to me.) I will generally indicate content original to others by using quotations and/or italicized text, and I will generally list the author(s), publisher and date of publication. It should be clear that I am quoting others’ work. I do so in a way meant to provide enough information so the site visitor can determine if they want to follow a given link and explore that content further. The layout and presentation is my idea, I created it and did not mirror it after any other site. Any similarities to other websites are coincidental.

Policy on Including Published Articles from Magazines and Other Content in General:

Articles from publications are included as an educational resource so that like minded people may benefit from their publication. Inclusion of articles in this website is also meant to generate viewership to respective websites. (The more traffic they get, then the more inclined and able they might be to continue publishing their content.) This website does not receive any compensation for inclusion of such articles, which are only provided here as a public service. Only article excerpts are included on this website. Full articles are not reprinted on this website. Article excerpts will link to the original article located on that publication’s website. Credit is given for authorship of all articles. At least one image is included to give visual appeal and to help differentiate content. Images are linked to the original article in which they appeared.

Privacy

Analytics & Cookies:

This website uses cookies and similar technologies, which are small files or pieces of text that download to your computer when you accesses this website. As is standard practice, this site uses cookies to enable site functionality, provide you with a good experience and for site analytics.

By using this website, you agree to it’s use of cookies.

This website is hosted by InMotion Hosting. Visit the InMotion privacy page for more on their privacy policies. I have not found where InMotion expressly does or does not gather information about your visit to this site. Please be aware that your browser freely provides basic information to every site you visit, including:

  • Information about your browser, network and device
  • Web pages you visited prior to coming to this website
  • Your IP address

reCAPTCHA has been implemented on this site, specifically in the “Contact Me” form. Your use of reCAPTCHA is subject to the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. If you opt-in, then cookies will be generated. These cookies will last for one year.

This website uses the Yoast SEO analytics plugin.

This website is registered with Bing and Google search analytics systems to analyze and understand the traffic that this website receives. Both those systems will collect information about your browser, network and device; Web pages you visited prior to coming to this website; Your IP address along with Clicks, Internal links, Pages visited, Scrolling, Searches, and Timestamps. I use the information those systems provide me to see how people visit this site, what they seem to be interested in and how I might improve the site in the context of usability and interest.

One important thing to understand is that website visitors (you) have the ability to both control what cookies are stored on your computer (mostly) and to delete any cookies that are stored there (mostly). For example, you can configure your browser to not accept third-party cookies and you can clear cookies at the end of a browsing session. However, every website visited will leave a trail and if you’re concerned enough then investigate methods of covering your tracks. Information generated by our browsing habits is extremely valuable. New technologies are continually developed to hoover it all up and monetize it. Welcome to the data-economy.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

This site does not sell anything, it does not have subscriptions and it does not have user accounts. In its present configuration this website does not collect any personal information about those who visit it. The only foreseeable change regards enabling commenting. If commenting is enabled then data will be gathered as outlined below.

Comments

When visitors leave comments on this website the data shown in the comments form is collected as is the visitor’s IP address and browser user-agent string to help spam detection. An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your Gravatar profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

It is not currently possible for visitors to this website to upload images or any other content. If you upload images to any website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

If you use the Contact Me form in this site, it will generate an email that I will receive and may keep for my records. As with any email, it will include information that may identify you. That is the general nature of email and is beyond my control. Otherwise, there is no other data generated by the contact form that I knowingly use in any way.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. These websites, through such embedded content, may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website. This website has no control over any aspect of these “other websites.”

Fonts

This website may use font files from Google Fonts, Font Awesome and Adobe “Typekit” Fonts. To properly display this site to you, servers where the font files are stored may receive personal information about you, including:

  • Information about your browser, network, or device
  • Your IP address

Who we share your data with

This website does not directly share any information with anyone else. Of course, there’s a whole world of data brokers who market our data and at present in the United States we are pretty much powerless to control them or hold them to account. (Although, California has recently made a good stride in addressing this situation, and Europe is ahead of the pack with the General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR.) Bing and Google are of course well connected data brokers and our information is held by them with little account to us whose information they hold. An example of how this works might be that since you’ve visited this site and looked at content on a given subject, a given data broker could infer some other characteristic about you and put that inference to some use. They might, for example, show you another website or product that you might be interested in consuming based on what you viewed here or at another website. Most, but not all, other interests will of course work to monetize your interests, that is the nature of the data-economy in which we now live.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments on this site, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes. If this website has such personal information you are welcome to contact me and request a copy and/or that it be removed.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service, such as Akismet Anti-spam. This website uses the In Motion hosting service which is located within the United States. To the best of my knowledge all of their servers are located within the United States and none of the internet traffic directly related to this website crosses into other jurisdictions. That cannot be said for sites that may be linked to from within this site. In the end, if site visitors are concerned then the onus is upon them to check before following such links.

What third parties we receive data from

This site is registered with Bing and Google. The only data received from them is that which is available through their respective Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tools, which in its raw form can’t be used to identify specific individuals, although it is at times possible to identify individual IP addresses. (If that’s a concern, use of at least a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to obfuscate your IP address might be worth considering.)

How we protect your data

This website uses an SSL Certificate to ensure that traffic between browsers and servers is secure. It’s not high level security, but it does provide a basic level of assurance that data traveling between your browser and the site’s servers is secure and not corrupted.
